Newt exclusion under Natural England Licence is accomplished by installing a temporary newt proof barrier around the development site. The barrier is shaped such that newts cannot pass into the working area.
During the initial surveys and as part of the Natural England Licence application an estimate of the newt population will have been made. The population estimate will indicate the extent of the time to remove the newts from the site by both trapping and by hand searching for them.
For a site which will have sufficient remaining habitat the newts can simply be moved to a suitable enhanced area on the safe side of the fence. For sites where there will be insufficient habitat the newts may need to be moved to an area where the habitat has been substantially improved for newts. The details for this will have been worked out as part of the Natural England Licence application.
