Population estimates have the same timing constraints as the presence or absence survey.
The process is exactly similar to the presence or absence survey but lasts for 20 days of inspection. The most cost effective way to perform this survey is as a continuation of the presence or absence survey.
Taking the site topographical survey in CAD format the GPS'd refugia sheets can be over laid together with the reptile data in our Geographic Information System giving the distribution of the population densities for the different species recorded.
The population estimate is the fundimental tool that allows desisions to be made. For example: will there be sufficent habitat avaiable to the reptiles once the development is complete or will they have to be moved from the site ? This could make the diference between finding them a new home and translocating them or simply setting aside an area of habitat enhanced for reptiles within the development site that can be left.
